We would draw attention to an alteration made in the outgoing mail service by which it will be seen that all mails in future for despatch in the morning will close at 10 p.m. the night previously. This alteration applies more especially to the Christchurch and English mails which hitherto have closed at 7 p.m., with the addition of a late fee to 5 a.m. the following morning. The extra fee is now abolished, and letters can be posted up to 10 p.m. the previous night. The monthly inspection of the local Rifle Contingent will be hold at the Adeliphi Hall this evening. A special meeting of the Hospital Committee will bo held to-morrow evening, to confirm the appointment of the medical officer appointed, vice Dr Acheson resigned. A Renter's telegram fr.im New York says :—A numerously-attended meeting has been held at Newark, New Jersey, to organise, a branch of the Land League. Mr Redpath made a speech, in the course of which he said Lord Leitrim was shot by a young man now living in Chicago for
dishonoring his sister. The man journeyed to Europe for the purpose. A grand concert and dramatic entertainment is announced to take place in aid of St. Patrick's School on the anniversary day of its patron saint. The ;drawing of Tonks' sweep on the Du'iiedih "Cup took place at Greymouth last evening. The winning numbers appear in another column. The only horse drawn in this district was On Dit; Messrs A; arid F. the well-known soap manufacturers have offered the English Government to print gratis the whole of the forms required in taking the forthcoming British Census with • permission to have the advertisement of "Pears' Soap" on the back. About eight million forms are required.
