The annual session of the Senate xti | the University of New Zealand was opened tOrday. I At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morniug, Wm. Rowe, formerly M. U.R., for the Thames, was charged with larceny of 2s from the Theatre Royal Hotel. The accused pleaded guilty, but said he was under the influence of liquor. In passing sentence, his Worship said he would have been very glad to be able to discharge the prisoner, but he could not help feeling that if he wera to do so he would be drawing a distinction in prisoner's favor, as against those persons whose education and chcumstauces had not been so good has his. As a public officer who owed a duty to the public, he was unable to do so. At the same, time, however, he was uiiwilling to sentence the accused to any lengthy period of imprisonment, and in being sentenced to undergo 48 hours' imprisonment, - the prisoner would perceive M&t a man of his education and reputation could not commit acts of this sort with impunity. Christchurch, February 16. The West Coast railway share lists are being tilled up more rapidly than was anticipated. A small shipment of cheese is being sent Home by the Otaki as an experiment. If it is profitable regular shipments will follow. Nelson, February 16. A fire broke out this morning in a shop occupied by 0. Webb, bootmaker, Hardy street. The flames had a good hold when discovered. The fire was however confined to the first building, which was insured in the South British for £l5O. Westport, February 16. A man named Hewitt, aged 24, was killed in the Colliery-Company's mine yesterday, by a block of coal, which he was hewing out, falling on him. His body w«s not discovered till some hours after the accident happened. Invercargill, February 16. An Orepuke miner, who recently visited Melbourne, has made a statement that perhaps may give a clue to the perpetrator of the Tararua gold robbery. On the day that the steamer came in he visited a room in a boarding house occupied by one of her passengers, and found the way impeded by a carpet bag, which he tried to mbve with his foot, but found so heavy that he had to put his hand to it. Its owner, a gentlemanly-looking fellow, left in an outgoing steamer soon after the Tararua's arrival, taking the carpet bag with him. i IHAWKE'S BAY V. AUSTRAMANS. [ Napier, February 16. The match Australians v. Twentytwo Hawke's Bay, did not commence till nearly three o'clock, owing to the threatening state of the weather. Hawke's Bay went in first, and made 79, Atherton 20, and Martin, 17, being the only double figures. Spofforth only made two. Play will be resumed tomorrow morning. BLENHEIM RACES.
