Melbourne, February 8. Mauritius advices to 28th January report that the engagement for sugar for Adelaide amounts to 455 tons, and for Hobson’s Bay to 2400; but the tonnage has not yet cleared. The market has a hardening tendency in consequence of the decreasing stock of sugar. The eWbtion of a member for East Melbourne, in room of the late A. K. Smith, took pla'Ce to-day, and resulted in the return of Walsh, a Constitutionalist, by a large majority. Sailed—Albion, for Bluff. Perth, February. 8. News has been received that A uyclone of a most severe character has visited the town of Roebournne, in the northwest of the Colony and the site of the pearl 'fisheries. Twelve boats used by the pearlers have been totally lost. Sydney, February 9. The jury has found that the tire at BeCket’s premises, Barrack street, last month, was caused by some person or persons unknown. The Estimates were tabled in tbe Assembly kst night. Tbe total expenditure is set down at £4,280,000, being an increase of £165,000. The increase is almost entirely iu the expenditure for education. The Government have announced that the sum of £60,000 will be spent in completing the torpedo defence of Sydney harbor. The barque John Knox, which sailed from this port yesterday for Lyttelton, put back to-day for repairs, having met with a heavy sea and suffered serious injury to her bulwarks.
