REMARKABLE CHARGE OF ABDUCTION.
At the Exeter Police-coUrt, on December 3, Cuthbert Granville wad charged with abducting Kate Green, a girl under siitberi. years of age. Miss Green stated that she first made the prisoner’s acquaintance abodt six Wfieka ago. He represented himself 10 be Lieut. Cuthbert Granville, of the 14bli Hussars, home from India on sick IpaVel After paying his addresflOS to her for A a few days he offered her marriage, Add. On questioning him as to his means, he Said he had £SOO a year from his father. Early in November he persuaded . hfeh to leave Exeter with him, but her frierids found them at Taunton and took her back; On Nov. 26 the prisoner again sought ah interview with her} and asked her to go to London to bri married, stating that be had had legUl advice ahd would he abte to marry, her if she pretended she was an orphan; She at first declined to gd with him} but he bbgah talking abdtit pistols and prussic acid} And this SO afarnied hist that she at last consented;, They spent the night in a , lodging-hdbsb in Sh Thomas, occupying separate SrOOtilS; The same evening the prisoner Sfeiit a post-card to her father. Shb did hob see what hfi wrote, but sAw him post lb. Its contents were As follows OH, fools of little faith ! Let those laUgfi that lose; those that win trill be siire to laUgh. By the time yoU gist' this Wfi ” shall be' 160 miles awAy frdrti Herb;— Granville.” On the following day they walked to Stoke Canon and took a train for Tiverton* where they maiued at an hotel until Nov. 30. They walked next to Bnrleacorilbri arid took a train for Wellington. On following evening Granville wis arrested. To prevent suspicion at the hotels, &c., he represented that they were brother and sister; MiSs Oreeii added that the prisoner threatened that if she attempted to go home, she would not do so alive, and that if licit* parents took her away it should be as a corpse; He also tried to prevent her wHtiiig; When the prisoner was arrested hd refused to give his real nanle. Capjt; Bent, chief constable of Exeter, told the prisoner that he bad reason to believe that he had tried to obtain admission to the Devon and Exeter Club Lieut. English, 24th Hussars, but bis Only reply was, “ For the present I’m Granville.” Two letters addressed to the girl’s father were found upon the prisoner* in one of which he stated that any attempt to ’get his daughter home, again would bS Waste of time, for ha was resolved that only death should separate them. Thfi prisoner made a long statement to the effect that Miaa Green was a consenting patty* When her parents took her away fVom hint at Taunton he bought some prdssic acid to poison himself with, but lost the bottle. He then went to a gunsmith’s to buy a pistol, but did not sncceed; He confessed having contemplated poi* souing some medicine the girl wap taking. The Bench committed him for trial at the assizes. '
