HOSPITAL MEDICAL OFFICER.
A meeting of the Hospital. Commit-; tee, in conjunction with delegates from the various’Friendly Societies, was held at the Secretary’s rooms,'last evening, for the purpose of considering, the various applications forwarded for the office of medical officer to the Kumara Hospital.
The. Hospital Committee were represented by Messrs Pearn, Maher,'Toms, Munyard, Spyer, Drummond, Agnew, Campbell, Mansfield, and Kiely. The Friendly Societies were represented as follows :—Oddfellows: Messrs M‘Kenzie and Hannah ; Foresters; Messrs Anderson and Dove ; Hibernian Society : Messrs Maloney and Callaghan; Good Templars ; Mr M'Lennon ; and German Society : Messrs Weisuer and Kroener. 1 ,
Mr Pearn was voted to the chair, and explained that, in accordance with a insolation passed at a meeting of the delegates of the various Friendly Societies and the Hospital Committee, advertisements had been inserted in the leading papers of the colony, as also in the Melbourne Argus and Sydney Morning Herald, for a duly qualified medical practitioner, to tase charge of the Kumara Hospital, and also holding forth the inducement of being appointed medical ofiicer to the various Friendly Societies in the district, should the delegates of the various societies’and the Hospital Committee amicably agree in the selection.
After some discussion on the powers of the meeting to appoint*, a medical officer to the Hospital, it was agreed to take the vote of the meeting in the selection of a medical, gentleman, and that in accordance with the rules of the Hospital, the Committee would subsequently meet and confirm the appointment. , ,
The following applications were then opened, and the testimonials (which in some cases were of the most voluminous character) read Dr.. Bartlett, Wanganui ; Di\ Smith, Greymouth ; ;;Dr. Johnstone, Melbourne; Dr. Den’toin, Oamaru ; Dr, Tichy, Melbourne ; Dr. Freeman, Queensland j Dr. ‘Porter, Nelson ; Dr. Cornyn, Wellington ; Dr. Rodgers, Auckland; Dr. Carrnthers, New South Wales ;= Dr. Hyde, Port Chalmers ; Dr. M‘Beaty, West Taieri, Otago; Dr. Cole, Lyttelton; aftd Dr; Dei-sham, Ontram. The applicants’ names were then suk mitted separately, and their qualifications discussed, open voting being resorted to in each instance, until the .number was eventually reduced to three—Drs Bartlett, Cole, and Porter. A ballot was then taken, resulting in the selection of Dr. Porter, 13 votes out of 19 being recorded in,his. favor.

the appointment of Dr. Porter, of Nelson, as medical officer of the Hospital xVas ratified, and the instructed to inform Dr; Pdrterff his appointment to the charge of tilfc institution, '
