Invercargill, February 7. A boy named M‘Quarrie, aged eight, was drowned off the Bluff wharf this evening. He was in company with several lads of about the same age, but they were unable to rescue him. Mr Thomas Spurgeon, son of the well-known preacher, was a passenger by the steamer from Melbourne to-day. The Colonial Bank intend to erect branch offices here, having secured a capital site near the Government buildings.
Dunedin, February 5. Mr Joseph Farra Jones, formerly of Wain’s Hotel, and lately of the Grand Pacific Ocean Bfeach Hotel, is supposed to have committed suicide early , this morning by throwing himself into the surf. Some of his clothes were found on the beach, and a body was seen being tossed by the waves some distance out, and has not been recovered yet. Deceased had been in monetary difficulties for some time, and bad shown suicidal tendency formerly. Adolphus Moritzon, late clerk of the Standard Insurance Company, has been committed for trial on several charges of embezzlement.

It is stated that Graham Berry expressed himself at the Intercolonial Conference, as willing to negotiate with New Zealand, as to reciprocity in the admission of certain articles, on either side or at a law rate of duty on the side of New Zealand, Beer and cereals were mentioned; and on the side of Victoria, wine and other articles of local production. It is understood that the New Zealand Government will open negotiations with Victoria, with a view to arrangement for the benefit of both colonies. The Hon. T. Dick arrived from Melbourne by the Rotomahana this morning, and was in attendance with the Hon. R. Oliver at the Ministerial office’ He proceeds to Wellington to-morrow, and will be followed by the Minister of Public Works in a few days. . At the City Council to-day, the Mayor stated that the current year’s expenditure would exceed the revenue by £15,000.
Christchurch, February 8. The foundation stone of the New Jewish Synagogue was laid to-day. A large attendance witnessed the ceremony.
T. H. Hodge, Railway tally clerk; recovered £25 damages against the Union Company for injuries received from a steam winch on board the Arawata. A sling struck him and knocked him out of a truck, causing severe injuries. Defendants pleaded that the accident was caused by Hodge’s negligence. The claim, was for £2OO. A man was committed for trial today for wilfully damaging a reaping machine at Lincoln. With the owner of the wheat he had had a quarrel. A meeting of those interested in the formation of a,company.to manufacture cement from material found at Oxford, was held to-day. It was resolved that it was desirable that experiments on a larger scale than hitherto should be made with a view to the formation of a company, and that the Committee already formed be requested, to take the necessary steps. It. was decided to ask the promoters to guarantee a small sum to defray the expenses of the experiments, such sum to be treated as a call on account of shares, and a bonus to be added for the risk incurred.
■Wellington, February 7. llie stabling at the Marquis of Norman by Hotel, Carterton, was destroyed by fire yesterday morning. It is supposed by incendiarism. It was insured in the Colonial for .£3OO.
February 8. The writ for the election of a member, vice Tainui resigned has been issued. Nominations on Ist March, and the poll takes place on the 10th of March. Westport and Arahura are polling places on the West Coast. The resignation of Taiaroa, as Native' Assessor, has been accepted. The cricket match was finished today, Wellington scoring 68 in their second innings, thus losing the match by one innings and 21 runs to spare. A scratch match was played during the afternoon, the : Australians having the best of it.
Auckland, February 5. In the walking match, seven miles, between Brett and Fernandety, the former won by half a mile.
In the Rifle match, 11 aside, Victoria v. New Zealand Company, the former won by 86 points.
February 7. The Mayor presented the prizes to the Girls High School on the 3rd. The pupils marks are 10 per cent, higher than last year. The Mayor expressed a hope that as the school was the largest of the kind in the Colony the Government would provide new buildings. The Acclimatisation Society have ordered 5000 trout from California.
At the half-yearly meeting of the Bay of Islands Coal Cbmjidiiyj it was stated that the coal sold last bftlf-year was 26,000 tons. ‘ £IOOO Were added to the reserve fund, and a dividend of 10 per annum declared. The Hob; Jas. Williamson was re-elected director.
A serious undetected robbery has occurred in the Epsom district.
A boy named James Edworth was thrown from a horse and dragged some distance. He. is'not expected to live.
