BRITISH AND FOREIGN". London, January 28. The debate in the House of Commons on the second reading of the Irish Coercion Bill was resumed to-day. Gladstone made a lengthy speech during the evening, in course of which he reminded the House that the increase of agrarian outrage and the Land League had progressed together, and were strongly connected. The coercive measures which the Government proposed to adopt, aimed solely at the punishment of evil-doers and abettors in agitation. The debate was again further adjourned. January 29. It is announced that the British Government is in aceord with other Powers in regard to the action to be taken for the settlement of the TurcoGreek difficulty, and has agreed to the proposed conference at Constantinople. At the same time it is known that the
Powers have been informed that England still believes the Berlin Treaty to be yet binding on Turkey. Capetown, January 29. further news to hand from Transvaal states that in the defeat at Langsnek, Sir George Colley's force had 100 rank and file killed, and five officers killed and three wounded. Intelligence to hand frorii Caffraria, states that the rebellion of the Pondomise, Tambus, and other tribes is daily collapsing, and it is expected shortly to be completely quelled. Paris, January 28. At to-day's sitting of the French senate, a bill giving Government power to grant bounties to French shippers, was finally discussed and agreed to. + . LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Sydney, January, 31. H.M.S. Emerald reports that she has recently visited the scenes of the Sandfly, Zephyr, and Borealis massacres, in the Solomon Group. She shelled the place and burned down many villages. The natives generally had absconded, but an armed boat's crew was killed, and another taken prisoner at Broker Island. The Emerald brings two witnesses of the massacre.
