TERRIBLE FIRE AND LOSS OF LIFE.
The Adelaide correspondent of the Melbourne Argus, under date January Ist, telegraphs:— On Thursday a terrible fire took place at a farm near Franklyn Harbour. Mrs Martin McCarthy, her five daughters, and son were all burned to death. The house is surrounded by a dense scrub, and so no assistance could be rendered. The father was engaged in reaping at the time. The fire at Wirrabara forest still continues. M'Carthy arrived at Wallaroo to-day
in an open boat with the chawed remains of his Wife, fiye. daughters, and son. The fire is described as being terrific. Even kangaroo dogs were Unable to get away. The fire originated in the Boothby Hundred, and was not expected to come near M'Carthy*s, 16 miles south-west of Franklin harbour. However, the wind changed, and the flames came np like magic, btmrfngeverything. McCarthy tried to get home, but was driven back, and his being to the leeward of the piece of failowland accounts for the escape of himself and four sons. The flames at one time were 40ft, high* After the fire was somewhat exhausted M'Carthy returned, home, and found the remains of his family.
