Nelson, Janu&ry 20. H. Buckeridge, J. P. (of the firm of E. Buxton and Co., merchants) was drowned at Mont ere yesterday. Together with his family he had been stopping out of town, and they . went out boating. On their return all had landed but deceased's son, when the dingy broke loose, and a strong wind drove it to sea. Buckeridge, seing his son's danger sprang into the water to swim to the dingy, but was unable to overtake it, and his stregth failing he sank, the body being recovered two hours later. The dingy, with the lad on board, was towed in safely, this morning. The whole of the melancholy accident took place in sight of Mrs, Buckeridge and her children. Afire broke out at 8 o'clock this morning in Dixon's Cordial Manufactory. Through the exertions of the fire brigade it *vas kept from damaging any of the plant, but the office and upstairs of the building were completely gutted. The building was insured in the South British office for £4OO j stock £500; but the office is not known. Dunedin, January 19. The New Zealand and Australian Land Company's sata of a portion of the Edendale property, Southland, proved a great success. Four thousand two hundred acres have been placed at the upset price. January 20. Cricket Match, Australian Eleven and Otago Twenty-two commenced to* day. The Australians went first to the wickets, and were all out for 112. The Dunedin team weut in for 5 minutes, but no wickets weie taken. The ninth annual conference of the New , Zealand Primitive Methodist Church, will be held at Dunedin this year. Nearly 40 ministers and layman from all parts of the Colony are expected. A Masonic Ladge, under the English Constitution, was consecrated at Whangarei. Mr Dent, rarlway inspector of permanent way, is dead. He was a personal friend of George Stephenson, and engaged, on Bassey's contracts in all parts of the world. The Waikato Masons telegraphed to the leading Auckland Masons re laying foundation of St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Cambridge, with Masonic rites. The Governor lays the foundation stone, but it is discovered that he is not a Mason. It is doubtful if the Masons will attend. January 20. The gold discovery, three miles south of Hamilton, is doubtful as no gold is showing in the reef. The Governor's dress levee was fairly attended. A number of Maori chiefs were sorely disappointed at not being presented to the new Governor, and had the same clothes they appeared in before Governor Robinson, but they said they would not go to be laughed at as they had no dress coats. The'Governor leaves for "Waikato tomorrow. The Masonic ceremony re foundation stone at St. Andrew's Church has been countermanded by R.W.P.G.M. Pierce. Lingard underwent a severe examination before the Trustee in Bankruptcy.
