BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, January 6. Sir Evelyn Woods is "to proceed to the Cape to command the British forces in the Transvaal. Parnell has arrived in London to attend the sittings of Parliament. Two hundred thousand pounds of Adelaide mortgage debentures have been subscribed for afc par. Six more Land Leaguers have been arrested in Ireland, and will shortly be placed on their trial. The official report of the disaster met with by a detachment of the 94th Regiment in the Transvaal, almost completely confirms the accounts first received. The detachment was escorting a convoy of supplies, when it was surrounded by the Boers, who summoned the British to surrender. Upon the latter refusing, the Boers swept down on them, and 112 officers and men were killed. Afternoon. Parliament was opened to-day. The Queens speech referred to the continued maintenance of the "European concert, and said that there was every reason to hope that a peaceful solution of the Turkey-Greek difficulty would be arrived at. Alluding to the state of affairs in Southern Africa, the speech said that owing to the rebellion of the Boeis, it was now necessary to take strong measuies to re-assert the British authority in the Transvaal. The outbreak in Basntoland, soon, it was hoped, would be suppressed. Regarding Afghanistan, the speech announced that it was not intended to retain Candahar; and referring to the unsettled state of Ireland, stated that Her Majesty's Go vernment would introduce Bills to provide for the necessary coercive measures for the suppression of the existing agitation, and a Bill would at the same time be brought forward dealing with the Irish laud question.
LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, January 6. The wool exhibits at the 'international Exhibition were opened today. They were of excellent quality, but scarcely sufficiently representative. Only a few exhibits are from New Zealand. January 7. The revenue of Victoria for the last quarter amounts to' £1,202,000, being an increase of £193,000 compared with the corresponding quarter of 1879. The chief increases are-.—Customs, £59,000; excise, .£03,000; public works, £67,000. The territorial revenue shows a decrease of £16,000. The revenue for 1880 amounted to £4,700,000, being an increase of £202,000 on 1879. SYDNEY, January 6. The revenue for the quarter amounts to £1,583,000, being an inciva.se of 333.000 compared with last year. There has been a large increase in the land sales. The revenue for the year shows" an increase of £430,000 Sailed—Union Company's Rotomahana for Auckland. Brisbane, January 6. The revenue for the half year amounts to £803,000, being an increase of £90,000 compared with last year. Adelaide, January 7. The South Australian Parliament has been prorogued. The exports of the Colony for the past year show an increase of £1,000,000.
