William Kerrison, who was deliberately shot by Walter Pringle Gibson on Christmas Eve, died this morning. Kerrison had persuaded his sister, who had been cohabiting with Gibson, to leave the latter, and this is believed to be the cause of the shooting. Gibson is in custody. The Coroner's Jury returned a verdict of " Wilful murder" against Gibson. This is the second case of murder to be tried this session. Blenheim, January 3. At the inquest today on the body of Mrs Daikie, found among the ruins of the house destroyed by fire on New Year's morning, the 'principal evidence was given by Daikie, "who stated that he and his wife were intoxicated when they went to bed. When he was awoke by the uoise of the fire in the ba'ck room, he got up and took his w'ife 'to the front door, and told her to open the door and run out as the fire was increasing. He did not open it, as she had plenty of time herself. He returned to the bed-room to threw oat what he could get, and, believing his wife escaped, he got through the window. Did not know his wife was missing until the house was so far burnt that nothing could be saved. Other evidence went to show that the Daikies lived on good terms. The jury returned a verdict that that there was no evidence to show how the fire originated. NfeLsox, Janu&ry 3. The noininations for Nelson Suburbs took placp to-day, when Messrs A. -S. The City of New York, with the London mails of the 2nd ultimo, left San Francisco for Auckland on the 21st, being one day later than the timetable sailing date. The Zealandia, with the Decembtr mails, arrived at San Francisco on the 28th ultimo, two days in advance of contract date. Auckland, January 3. The s-.s. An unpleasant feeling prevails as to the genuineness with which Matthews rode Foul Play in the Grand Stand Handicap, and it is shared by M'JJonaldj the owner of the horse, who backed him to win a good round suuh So strong was his feeling that he discharged Matthews on the spot, and it is understood will ask the Stewards to inquire into his conduct. Matthews repudiated the charge, and also mands ah inquiry. The inquiry will be held to-morrow.
