The trial of the Land Leaguers at Dublin, which commenced on the 28th, was opened by the liish AttomeyGene:al in a speech for the prosecution, which has occupied the last four days. The speech is based on the charges laid against the Leaguers ;chiefiy on their utterances at the different meetings throughout the country. Intense interest is taken in the trial, the court being d'eusely crowded. •Jairnary 3. The Times, in a leading article today, stales that the Coercion Bill which the Government intend ; to introduce will propose the 'suspension of 'the Habeas Corpus Act, and the suspension of trial by .jury in Ireland ; "and will, moreover, restrict the sale and possession of arms. Capetown, -January : 3. Intelligence has been received that the Boers in the Orange lviver Free State threaten to join in tire rebellion in the Transvaal, though ivo actual outbreak has yet occurred. C'ommnnication between Transvaal and Natal is completely cut off by the Boers, and no news has, therefore, been received ftom the seat of hontilibies for some day*. Constantinople, January 3. It has transpired that the Porte has declined to arbitrate for the settlement of the Greek frontier question, and has now ulade a proposal to the Great Powers that the Conference, to which Greece should send delegates, should be held at Stamboul. ♦ LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Sydney, January 4. The'crew of the New Guinea colonising steamer Genii have been insubordinate, alleging that they were insufficiently fed. The Captain appealed to the authorities, but they have declined to interfere on the ground that there is uo Liberian Consul here. The crew is composed mostly of Malays and Chinese, and have come ashore in a body, and refuse to re-embark. Melbourne-, January 3. The cricket match between the Australian Eleven and the Combined Team of Victoria and New South Wales was resumed to-day. The latter continued their first innings, and were all disposed of for 99 runs. The Australians then went in for their second innings and scored 185. The following are the individual scores :—Blackham, 0 ] A. Bannerman, 11 ; Murdoch, 39; Spofforth, 4 ; M'Donnell, 37 ; 'Slight, 4 5 Bonner, 13 ; Boyle, 4 ; Palmer, 2 . Groube, 19 ; Alexander, 42. The com-' bined team then requiring 259 runs to' win, went in for their second innings, and when the stumps were drawn for the day had put together 40 runs for 4 wickets.
January 4. The cricket; match, Australian Team v. the Combined Eleven of New South Wales and Victoria, was resumed today. The" Combined Eleven were all disposed of in their second innings for 80 runs, and the Australians thus won by 178. Mauritius advices to 24th December report the sugar market there as very strong, and sugars generally from £2 to £2 10s per tan higher; tonnage was scarce.
