The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. FRIDAY, JUNE 25, 1880.

The attention of those who were granted licenses at the late sitting of the Licensing Court is specially directed to a notice under the hand of the Clerk of the Resident Magistrate's Court, Kumara, that appears in another column. Any person not strictly complying with the instructions issued by Mr Barton will find themselves in the disagreeable position of possessing the right only to hold a license which they cannot carry into effect. The Borough Council held their ordinary fortnightly meeting at the Town Hall last evening, the Mayor in the chair and all the Councillors present with the exception of Councillor Pierson. After the minutes of the last meeting had been confirmed, it was unanimously agreed to write to Mr Seddon, M.H.R., and request him to urge on the Government the continuance of the subsidy to the Council for the ensuing half-year as the Council had incurred liabilities on the presumption that it would be paid as heretofore, In accordance with a letter received from the Secretary of the Harbor Board, the Mayor was requested to call a public meeting on Monday next to discuss the matter. Accounts to the amount of £135 were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned. A public meeting is convened by his Worship the Mayor, for Monday evening next, at the request of the Hokitika Harbor Board. Considerable wonder and speculation existed amongst those assembled at. the head of Maher shaft yesterday as to what peculiar attraction could possibly exist therein that could induce so mauy of the fair sex to allow themselves to be tied like lambs and caged for the pleasure of being lowered into the bowels of the earth. Eagerly as they were scanned on their return to the surface, beyond the more than ordinary rosy bloom that adorned

their countenances (caused by the novelty in traveling), nothing unusual could be detected either in their demeanour or appearance to account for this surprising magnetisan. The " cat was let out of the bag," however, most unconsciously by one of these gentile amateur miners, who remarked as she thought sotto voce to a friend and with a most unsatisfied expression— "He only gave mo one " when we were coming up. This remark, taken in connection with certain osculating sounds heard at intervals when the cage was ascending, at once accounted for the number of passengers by Maher's perpendicular travelling carriages. Lord Radstock, a famous Irish peer who has been doing volunteer work as an evangelist with marked success, has made a convert of the Russian General Pashkoff, who has in turn become an evangelist, and is creating quite a sensation along the Neva by his. sermons. Pashkoff is one of the wealthiest landowners in Russia.
