[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, June 20. The Southern Cross arrived from Levuka with the following items of news to June 12 ; The Colonial Company, Sydney, are erecting a sugar manufactory, with plant, at a cost of £IOO,OOO. They guarantee to commence in June, 1882, paying the planters 10s per ton for cane. The Governor has commuted the death sentence in the case of Simpson, tried by the High Commissioner’s Court at Potumab, for the murder of Kapnnefci in December last. He has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment. A lew good specimens of auriferous quartz have been discovered in Vite Lerug. A government prospecting party has gone out. The discovery was made by a New Zealand miner. Bishop Selwyn arrived at Levuka on the Ist instant in the Meg Merrilies, and goes on to Sydney.
