The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening, MONDAY, JUNE 14, 1880.
At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Edmund Barff, Esq., J.P., Peter Drury was charged with robbery, with violence, from one Mary Howley, and remanded until Thursday next. The New Zealand Gazette of the 3rd inst. contains the appointments of John Arnott and William Simpson Smith, Esqrs., as members of the Licensing Courts of Kumara and Greenstone, which are to be held on Thursday next. Edmund Barff, Esq., J.P., is also gazetted, but forwarded his resignation to the Government, which, we learn, was subsequently accepted. Among the new Justices of the Peace gazetted for the colony and its dependencies we observe the name of James Kerr, Esq., of Gveymouth, ono of the proprietors of this journal.
The following members of the local Rifle Contingent are notified, by order of the officer commanding the district, as entitled to marksmen’s badges for the current year, the scores made in the annual course of musketry instruction being Lieut. Munyard, 99 (rifle and three stairs); Sergt. Davies, 93; Sergt. Falvey, 77 ; Sergt. Smith, 72; Private Coutts, 70 ; and Private Simmons, 65 (rifle and two stars each). We are glad to observe that Mr C. E. Button, with his characteristic generosity, has kindly intimated his intention of giving an exhibition of his lime light views to the children attending the various Sunday schools in this town, at the Adelphi Theatre, on Thursday evening next. Although ostensibly the views will be exhibited to delight the children, Mr Button has lately received a large number of scenes that will be equally appreciated by adults, who will also be admitted to the entertainment on the payment of a small fee which has necessarily to be charged to liquidate the expenses incurred in giving the exhibition. As all the Sunday school children are invited irrespective of denomination there should be a large gathering of the rising generation on the occasion in question. In accordance with an opinion expressed by the contractor of the Kumara sludgechannel when replying to the deputation of the Kumara and Dillman’s Town Working Men’s Association, Mr Maher has invited tenders for two separate contracts for driving the tunnel.. Tenders are also invited for sinking a shaft, about 100 feet in depth, plans and specifications of which can be seen at Rugg’s Kumara Hotel. In connection with the contract we may state that the engine recently imported from Melbourne by Mr Maher is now in position, and that the ceremony of christening the same prior to its commencing work will take place in a few days. The baptismal name to be conferred on the engine in question is, we understand, to be “ The Herculean Larrikin.” On the motion of Mr Ireland, M.H.R., the following motion was carried in the House of Representatives on Tuesday last : —That in the opinion of the House it is desh'able that post-offices, particularly in small country towns, should be utilised for the sale of the “ Crown Lands Guide,’’ Acts of Parliament, &c., with which it would be well to supply the public at a reasonable price.
