Sittings of the Resident Magistrate’s and Warden's Courts were held this morning, before Jv-Mackay, Esq., R.M., fhe reports of which are held over. Owing to the Inconvenience that arises through persons visiting theirfriends in the hospital at all hours, we arerequested to state that in future, unless by the special order of the medical officer, no person will be. allowed admission except during the visiting hours provided in the rules of that institution, which hours are notified on a-board at the entrance-door. Mr Seddon, M.H.R., was peculiarly fortunate in the proposer and seconder of the vote of confidence moved- in him as a representative of this district in the House of Representatives at the termination of his late speech in Hokitika, as, by the report of the West Coast Times, we find that “Mr John Cross, on the understanding that Mr Seddon would be found on the side of Sir George Grey, moved a vote of confidence in Mr Seddon.” Mr King in seconding, “ believed Mr Seddon was justified in refusing to pledge himself blindly to any particular cause.” Did the proposer or seconder represent the unanimous feeling of the district 1 The sale of Messrs D. Davidson and Co. ’s large drapery stock will commence at 1 o’clock to-morrow, when Mr F. A. Learmonth will submit the various lines to public competition. The business premises occupied by them will also be passed under the hammer. Under instructions from the School Commissioners, Mr F. A. Learmonth will submit to public auction, on Saturday next, the right to lease, for a term of years, section 303, in Seddon street. The drawing of Tonka’s sweep on the Adelaide Queen’s Birthday Cup will take place to-morrow, and all those wishing to secure an interest therein must necessarily make application this evening. A few tickets are in the hands Mr Gilbert Stewart, of this town, and also of Mr Peters, Dillman’s Town. A telegram from Melbourne states that soon after the Orient left Plymouth, a passenger named G. A. Hill shot himself, another first-class passenger named Travers, when the vessel was near St. Vincent, jumped overboard and was drowned; a third class passenger, named Scott, was also missed, and it is believed he jumped overboard. The actual steaming time was 34 days one hour and a half.

A rich reef has been discovered in Barraba country, beyond Tamwdrth, New South Wales. The stone obtained' is 16 feet thick, .containing coarse gold. A serious difference has, it is reported, arisen in the Prussian Cabiaet on the question of orthography. Herr von Puttkammer, without consulting his colleagues, has issued a circular directing the officials in his own department to use the new German orthography in all official communications, and Prince Bismarck has instructed all officials in his depart-* ment to use nothing but the old mode of spelling. Several ether heads of departments took the same course. Herr yon Puttka turner, considering orthography a matter belonging more particularly to his own department as Minister of Public Instruction, feels, it is said, seriously aggrieved, and demands that either he should have his way or else that he should be permitted to resign his office.
