Christchurch, May 14. A man, named David Davis, was arrested to-day at the order of the It.M.,for perjury in a civil case, heard this morning. He swore that a certain signature was not his, as he spelt his name in a different way and was immediately confronted with his own bankruptcy, signed in three places, precisely similar to the first mentioned signature.
Wellington, May 14. A statement is being compiled by order of Government, and will be' presented to Parliament showing the comparative extent and value of the endowments, rates, and property of the various municipalities in New Zealand.
The steamer Grafton which arrived from Westport this evening struck the Westport bar, there being insufficient water for her to cross. She had her rudder carried away and three blades knocked off her propeller. Temporary steering appawas rigged and the vessel came on to Wellington.
Auckland, May 13. A poor woman named Margaret Aspen, with four helpless children and a baby in arms, arrived Per Te Anau from' Brisbane. It seems she received a letter from her husband, John Aspen, to come on to Auckland, and he would meet her there. She sent a letter telling him that she was coming, add when she arrived her own letter was still in the post-office unclaimed. The woman is helpless and lias no means whatever. The police have found no clue to the whereabouts of Aspen. The inquest on Walsh, who was killed on the Waikato Railway resulted in a verdict of <( Accidental death.” Tne jury added a rider to the effect that the Government be advised to inaugurate a system of Communication between guard and engine driver, and also recommend that all stations should be ih telegraphic communication.
