Dunedin, May 13. Nothing new has come out regarding the sudden disappearance of Mr J. S. Webb, but it is understood that no defalcations have been discovered in his accounts.

On Monday, in his monthly report to the Harbor Board, Captain Hanson suggests that the central penal establishment for New Zealand should be

formed at Hey ward's Point. This Point, which is below Port Chalmers, is said to be a very out of the way place aud suggestive of a sort of Siben'a, and if his recommendation is carried out, the Harbormaster desires to have the prison labor utilised in forming a breakwater, which would remove the bar. The report was referred to the Works Committee.

A telegram from Arrow says :—A cake of gold, 367 ozs 10 dwts, from 93 tons of quartz from Gladstone claim, came to town last night. This return, nearly equal to 4 ozs to the ton, is the best yet obtained at Macetown.

Balclutha, May 13. Alfred Shiels, aged 18, son of a settler at Puriri, was accidentally killed at 9.30 a.m. yesterday. He and his brother had got a young horse in the stock yard, which they were endeavouring to break in. The gate was shut by one rail, near -which the deceased was standing. The horse leaped through the gate, when the rail was displaced and struck the deceased in the chest. He fell, but at once got on his feet again, aud then fell to the ground and expired in a few minutes.

Wellington, May 13. George Jones, poulterer, received a serious injury yesterday, by being thrown over a precipice on Rimatrka Hill, owing to his horse shying.

Nelson, May 13. A fire occurred at Waimea West, this morning, when Mr Palmer's Hotel was burnt. The landlord loses everything, and Palmer's insurance on the buildiog, which is valued at £BOO, only amounted to £4OO.
