In consequence of the heavy .wind last night several trees were blown down across the tramway line, and the mail from Greymouth did not arrive till noon. The heavy rain also caused a portion of the track between Dillman’s Town and Larrikins, which was undermined, to suddenly collapse, thereby causing communication between these two places, as far as horse traffic is concerned, to be temporarily stopped.
We learn by a telegram received by R. J. Seddon, Esq., M.H.R., from the Hon. the Minister of Public Works, that the calling for tenders for the second section of the Kumara sludge-channel is unavoidably delayed through the non-receipt of a report from Mr Blair, the Engineer-im Chief. It is to be hoped, for the credit of Mr Oliver, that the red-tapism part of the business will be promptly attended to, and tenders called without any more delay for this important work.
A meeting of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows will be held at the Lodge-room, in Main street, this evening, to consider some business of great importance.
The usual weekly parade of the local Rifles will be held to-moiraw evening, when, we understand, arrangements will be made for visiting Greymouth on the Queen’s Birthday.
The Hokitika mail arrived to-day two hours after contract time, without the least excuse for this most annoying delay. On this subject we shall have more to say in a subsequent issue. Owing to the flooded state of the Arahura river the exhibits of the Oriental Exhibition were delayed in their transit here to-day ; but should the weather in any way prove favorable the Exhibition will be opened to-morrow afternoon, when we shall be able to form a better opinion of its merits or otherwise.
Mrs Margaret Tumy, aged 70 years, died at Cincinnatti on January 18, after having been (according to the San Francisco Bulletin) thirty days without food. A month previously she refused to take food, saying she had no stomach, and the utmost efforts of her physicians and friends have been unavailing to change her purpose.
