Christchurch, May 4. The remains of the late W. F. Neilson were buried to-day. The coffin was carried to the grave by six of his friends, and there was a large following. Neilson was a relative of the Hon. W. E. Gladstone.
The Co-operative Land Company have accepted the recommendations of the two delegates who have been inspecting land in the North Island, and will take up a section in Taranaki. Dunedin, May 5. As the last goods train from Clinton had got about half a mile on this side of Waihola last evening, the engine apparently struck something, and the train was stopped immediately. The guard, on looking about, found a man dead, lying across tire rails. A telegram was received in town this afternoon, intimating that the body has since been indentified as that of one Jas. Bacon. It was removed to Waihola, where an inquest will be held in due course. An examination of the engine attached to the goods train which followed the express showed that there were marks of blood and brains upon it so that the deceased must have been killed by this engine.
