CORRESPONDENCE.

[The Editor does not, necessarily* adopt tile opinions expressed by correspondents.] AN EXPLANATION; [to the editor.] Silt—Being absent from town lately I was precluded from attending the meeting held on last Friday evening relative to prospecting; and, on. reading your report of the same in Saturday evening’s issue* I observed that one of the speakers, Mr Wylde, made the following statement j “ He could not speak as to the of the old association, as Mr Dungan was treasurer, and ho was not present.” Had I been present at the meeting* I would gladly have tendered the information that when the labors of the old

Committee were brought to a close, a : of accounts was drawn up of -all moneys received and expenditure made to the last shilling; in fact, a balance-sheet was made out at the 'meeting-room of the committee by Mr Wylde as secretary, and myself as treasurer, and published in the Kumara Times for public information on behalf ‘of the committee. Surely Mr Wylde, •in ever so modest a way, ought to have some little knowledge of attaching his name to a public document of this kind—that contained the financial position of the old association. But perhaps Mr Wylde, in his remarks, wished to extend to me a studied or 'polished •courtesy, from the position that I had occupied on the old committee ; yet it is equally well known that I am on on the spot, both to give particular and polite attention to the matter.—l am, ■sir, &c., P. Duncan, Treasurer of the old Association, Kumara, May 3rd, 1880.
