CiiAfttESTON, April 23. A serious fracas occurred to-day. The manager of the Government race and the road contractor met In a lonely spot, where they fought savagely. An information was laid, and is to be heard before the Resident Magistrate. The matter causes much comment.
Christchurch, April 22. The Synod, after a considerable discussion, adopted the provisional table of lessons at present in use, until such time as it shall be determined by the General Synod on what principle, and in what manner this or other alterations in. the formularies should be adopted-.
Wellington, April 22. The Gazette states that the duration of the existing treaties of commerce and navigation with France is prolonged. A letter from W. H. Eldred, Consu-late-General of Ghilia, states that from the official newspapers of Santiago and De Chili to hand by last mail, that the ports on the coast of Peru up to the 19th degree of southern latitude are. in possession of the forces of the Republic of Chili, and " I have reason to believe that the Peruvian Coast to north of that parallel is actually under blockade by the Chilian fleet." "
A destructive fire occurred at Burnhatnpton this afternoon, a house owned by J. F. Wright being totally destroyed. The furniture valued at ,£BOO, belonging to D. P. Davis, who occupied the building, was also consumed, The origin is unknown. It is believed the house is insured in the National.
April 23. It is understood that Government confirms the report made by the Commission that inquired as to the conduct of Mr Whitelaw, tile Superintendent of the Asylum, and completely exonerated him from the charges made by the ex-attendant.
The insurance on Wright's house destroyed by fire last night was £4OO in the London and Globe, furniture £4OO in the New Zealand.
Napier, April 23. A Serious fire occurred at the Spit early this morning, Gallop's Commercial Hotel being destroyed by fire. The Victoria lose £4OO on the buildings, and South British .2450 ditto. The Hanseatic £6OO on the stock and furniture. The house was a very old one. Singularly enough the annual dinner o£ the fire brigades was just over, and many congratulations were exchanged on the long immunity from fire in Napier. The damage, was confined to the hotel by the strenuous efforts'.of the brigades, who, .owing to the strong pressure of water from the reservoir, were enabled to cope with the lames. An inquest will probably be held as the insurance offices are dissatisSed.
