[united press association.] Wellington, April 21. The Hon. Colouiul Secretary re* turned from south to-day. Major Atkinson, Colonial Treasurer, leaves for Taranaki this evening for a short holiday.. The Government have recently imported from Messrs Chance Bros, and Co. lighthouse engineers, Birmingham, a number of lamps intended for use as coast lights,in positions which do not warrant the coast of erecting lighthouses.
At Otaki, yesterday, William Jenkins, who was instrumental in saving the lives of immigrants wrecked there in the ship City of Auckland in 1878, was presented with the bronze medal ot the Royal Humane Society. The mission steamer arrived on Thuisday, April 4th, from the Islands. The Rev. Mr Chalmers reports having visited the mission stations of the Gulf ot Carpentaria and Terries Straits where all were well. Captain Redich, naturalist, and explorer, fell overboard from her the day after leaving Port Moresby, and was drowned. Dunedin, April 21. The minor charges against Butler will be heard to-morrow. It is reported that on the murder case he will apply to have the veuue of the case changed to Christchurch. At a meeting of volunteer officers this afternoon, it was resolved to hold the strictest enquiry into the charges against the volunteers who took part in the late review, and to deal with known offenders speedily. Oamaru, April 21. Drs Garland and Waite have certified to the insanity of Julia Paul, she was, on rceipt of a communication from the Colonial Secretary forwarded to the Dunedin Lunatic Asylum by early train this morning.
.A, coroner’s inquest was held to-day, hospital on the body of H. Aitken, who died in the hospital on Monday afternoon from injuries received by falling from an express near Duntroon on January 16, when a verdict of accidental death caused by the: dislocation of the back was given. Christchurch, April 21. Scab has broken out among the sheep on Mr Edgar Jones’s run on the south side of Hope and Waiau, caused by sheep crossing the river on the northern side; ■ R. Foster, sheep inspector, recommended last year, in his
Report of *heep iti Amuri district, that runs on the north side should be fenced to effectually prevent sheep crossing, and that sheep should be killed as soon as-possible. His instructions were not acted upon, the result being that sheep have crossed and the disease is fast spreading. Squatters in the district are actively engaged mustering and doing all that can be done to meet the difficulty.
Auckland, April 20. Ann Hogan and Mary Welsh were committed for trial in connection with the robbery of £ls from the Crown Hotel. At the Harbor Board meeting, a letter was read from the Lyttelton Harbor Board, offering to dispose of its plant; also a letter from the Minister of Justice, endorsing the rider of the jury on the inquest ’ of Bowstowe, killed iu the dock.
