Daring the past year there have been 82 fires in Canterbury, on which claims have b«en paid to the amount of £55,440, of this £32',000 was for fires in Christchurch for three months. Messrs Blair, Bell, and Higginaou, engineers arrived here to-day, and have been engaged taking evidence as to the cause, of the damage, to Inch Clutha and neighborhood during the floods of 1878. Eleven persons have been examined.

At the Resident Magistrate’s Court here to-day, Isabella Hamlyn, was charged with the murder of her new born infant at Sterlidg, on the 6th March. A number of witnesses have yet to be examined, and the accused was remanded till Saturday to Tokomuriro. Mr D. Reid, who appeared for accused, asked that she be admitted to bail which was agreed to, herself in £IOO, and two surities of £SO each. Gisborne, April 13. The Frauds Commission Court sat all day yesterday, but no certificates were granted, even in cases where all the parties to the deed were present and expressed themselves satisfied with the transaction. Auckland, April 13. A deputation from the Harbor Board interviewed the Hon. Mr Oliver re railway reclamation works. Ho denied that a settling was taking place, and suggested that the railway terminus should be at the junction of Custom House and Port streets instead of carried to Queen street' wharf; also that the reclamation should' be narrowed. As far as possible he would give effect to the wishes of the commercial public. Mi-Oliver declined to receive further deputations to-day, owing to indisposition.
