BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, April 5. The returns of the elections so far as known show 271 Liberals, 141 Conservatives have been elected j showing a majority of 130 to the Liberals, The total number of seats gained by -the latter is 59, and their majority is sufficient to make them quite independent of the support of the Home Rule party. It is generally thought quite probable that Gladstone will not accept office should the Liberals come into power.
The election for Middlesex took place to-day, and resulted in the return of the two former members—Lord Geo. Hamilton, and Mr J. E. Coope. Mr Herbert Gladstone, a son of the ex-Premier, who Contested the election was defeated.
Bombay, April 5. A report reached here from Cabnl that Mahomed Jan, leader of the Afghan tribes at .Ghuznee, has been killed.
