Of the five on the card Ladylove, Little John, and the Little Lady, colt, were scratched, and May Mom had an easy victory. The steeplechase was also a hollow affair, Shillelagh being the only one of the horses to go round. The Hack Selling Steeplechase pro* duced a very good field. The finest race of the day was the Autumn Handicap, in which the four horses ran almost in a cluster till enter* ing the straight, when Chancellor drew slightly away, and won a grand race by a bare length from Tera, with Blue Peter a good third. Kovel Race—Adamant,. 1; May Morn,, 2 ; Deception, .3, S. Brooks completed his task of walk* ing 120 miles in 23 hours 48 mins. Auckland, March 18. . A breakfast in connection with the present session of the general assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, was keld to-day. Fifty persons, including several ladies, were present.
A foot race is on the tapis between R. P« Hutton, of Auckland, and Mr Janies Freer, of Gisborne, for £SO aside. Distance 100, 150, and 200 yards. The winner of two events out of three to take the money. Christchurch, March 17.
A woman named Faith Gibson, alias Faith Minnie, was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment to-day on two charges of shop lifting. A third charge was dismissed, as there was a little doubt about the indentity of the article, Her husband is a respectable man. The woman had no excuse to offer, and her lawyer threw up the defence before the case had gone far.
Information was received in town |his afternoon "of the arrest of Mr Edward Barringer, bank agent at JCaikouras, very recently transferred from Leeston, for embCzzlitig £3O belonging to the bank. It is said that further charges of a similar nature Will be pro* ferred against accused. " Barringer Was removed from the Christchurch office to Leeston some two years ago> and always bore the character of a steady and respectable man., He was married and has a family; and great sympathy is felt for. the unfortunate position in in which they are placed. Thacker’s hotel, at, Okain’s Bay, Banks' Peninsula, was burnt down last night, and nothing was saved. Mr and Mrs Thacker escaped with great, difficulty from the burning building. The stock and furniture were insured in the South British for some £1200..

A man fell down; the chimney of the new Farnley brick works on Tuesday, a distance of 35 feet. He was saved from death by striking against some of the supports in descent, but .was seriously injured.
THE DUNEDIN MURDERS. Dunedin, March 19. The Coroner’s inquest on the bodies of the Dewar family was resumed today, when-several witnesses were examined, and the inquest adjourned until Tuesday. Dr Niven gave evidence as to. the appearance of the bodies. From other evidence it appeared that the prisoner Butler, who had been under police surveillance since his discharge from gaol, on the 16th of last month, was seen by Detective Bain on the Saturday previous to the murder. On a former occasion he said to Bain, after asking for' work, “ I want to do well to myself this time, and would like to get work, because if I break loose again I will be one of the most desperate tigers ever let loose in a community.” Bain got him some manual work at Ravensborne. He had previously asked to be introduced to some of the newspaper editors, as he was desirous of writing some articles for them. '
