, OrfRiSTCHURCEE, March 15 ; At the Police Court this mofiningj a man named James Brown was charged with cruelty to animals; It Whs proved that he had left a couple of hordes harnessed to a,,cart standing out all night in a stprin of rain, and as it was not the first time he had done this kind of thing, the Magistrate sent hint to gaol for a fortnight without the optidn of a fine.
The Native Lands ComMs&idd is still sitting at Akaroa. Mr Clarke presented an urgent petition from 300 natives at Aprimea, Southland, asking the Commissioners to hold a sitting there, in order that they toay be heard in connection with the purchase of the Murihiku Block' The Commissioners decided to proceed to Aprimea after finishing the inv.estigation .at Akaroa. ‘

The dwelling house of Mr Stamper, solicitor, corner of High and Alva streets, was bnrned down early this morning. The only insurance was .£650 in the South British, ‘which, will not cover the loss. Nothing is known as to the origin. A meeting of about 500 of the unemployed to-day resolved not to accept less than seven shillings per day, 'and decided to forward a petition to Government expressing their, unwillingness to accept the terms offered. A deputation from the West Coast Railway Committee wait on the Railway Commission to-morrow morning, for the purpose of giving Evidence. A man named Jas. Grey, bootmaker, at Pahautamii, was knocked down by a runaway horse this afternoon, and seriously injured.

Thomas Hawkins, clerk in the -railway department, was arrested for ■ embezzlement of .£92 and remanded till Monday; also Frank Foxton, for embezzling <£s3, the property of the Bank of New South Wales, and similarly remanded.. The prisoner was teller in the Bank, and came down some time ago from the Bank in Sydney. At the inquest held bn-, the.', body of Herbert Hinde, a verdict of ‘‘ found drowned” was returned. He had been generally intemperate. THE DUNEDIN MURDERS. Dunedin,! March 16. At the City Police Court this morning, in the presence, of a great crowd, the man Robert Eutler, alias Donnelly, alias Medway, alias Lee, was charged bn information with the murder of) Mr and Mrs Grant and child on Sunday morning last; and remanded until .Monday next. . He is, also charged with attempting to shoot the arresting constable.- Inspector Mallard. intimated that there would probably be a third charge of, arson, or burglary, at -the house of Mr Stamper, lawyer,;, on Saturday morning. . It appears that the prisoner, who had been recently discharged from gaol-bad been lodging at the Scotia Hotel,;, minutes, walk of the He did, not occupy' his lodgings^on Friday or Saturday night, but returned on Sunday morning within half an hour of the, murder, and after paying his bill he walked to Biueskin, changing his clothes, by, the .way,, and clipping off his moustache. .‘ When arrested he had loaded revplyers bud a number of cartridges, but was. secured before he could use them. He is a sharp-looking man, under 30.
