[united press association.] Wellington, March 12. At the inquest to-day to ascertain the cause of the recent fire at the Pakutahi Hotel, the jury returned an open verdict. An official enquiry was held this afternoon into the circumstances connected with the barque Sophia R. Luhrs striking a sunken rock off the Heads a fortnight ago. The decision of the bench was that Captain Patton had acted imprudently in sailing so near to shore, but that inasmuch as the rock in question was not marked on the chart, no blame could be attached to the captain. Auckland, March 10. Hall and Whitaker left this morning by train, accompanied by a party of gentlemen, for Mataimata. The Premier, aided by an. elaborate map from , the Public Works Office, was enabled to distinguish the principal districts and features of importance as he journeyed along. Telegrams received by Auckland merchants stating that bills which they had held accepted by Goodefroy and dishonored, have been paid.
