CORRESPONDENCE.
[Tile Editor does not, . necessarily, adopt the opinions expressed by" Sorrc spondents.] •" THE COUNTY AND BOROUGH COUODLLORS. [to the editor.] Sir —There is at the present time a movement started, the object being to separate that part of the district known as Larrikins, and Dillman's Town, from Westland County. To carry out tins' object it appears necessary to the movers in this matter, that the Borough of Knmara should be done away with for the purpose of creating a new County Council, or that its boundaries should be extended so as to take in the above two places. Upwards of three years ago, Kumara sought and obtained separation from, the County Council * and formed itself into a borough, because it did not receive considerations justly due to it. At the time also it was suggested to include Billman'a Town in the borough, but the inhabitants gave the proposition a cold shoulder ; therefore the present boundary of that place waß fixed upotK Since that time we have continenced and, after the a lapse of a few weeks at. most the chief of, our improvements will have been completed; and" if the Council judicially manage the financial department, our revenue from licenses, court fines, and other sources, will prove ample for ordinary purposes* But should the boundary of the borough be extended, as proposed at f the meeting held on Wednesday: las* at;©illman's Town, or the borough'done away with, for the purpose. of forming a county, we may at once and for ever abandon all thought of .being free front taxation, as such- a proposition means nothing less than allowing strangers to divide our revenue,, and>-taxing ourselves for the purpose of making roada which, are beyond our own ..districts Should the inhabitants of Larrikins and Dillman's Town require assistance, there is no place to be found or would prove more ready and willing in offering their assistance than Kuniara \ but, under present circumstances, it cannot bat appear unreasonable to expect our compliance with such • a proposition, although suggested by oar own councillor, Mr Seddon.—l am, &c, Geo. Simmons.
AN EXPLANATION. [I(J THE EDITOR.] Sir—til your issue of the 18th inst j your correspondent " Subscriber " to the Irish Relief Committee of Stafford asks if the sum of £37 8s dd forwarded to the fund of this district has been received. With permission, I Would state that the amount Was acknowledged by the committee at a meeting of Saturday, evening, the 21st inst., and duly recorded on the: minutes which were submitted to the KtJMARA Times for publication. I forwarded a receipt, accompanied by a letter expressing the thanks of the committee, on Tuesday, the 24th. to Mr Sandie/ Eton, Secretary of Stafford Committee. I despatched a similar letter to. the Honorable Secretary of Goldsborough. Committee, and another to Mr Mc'lnerney, Christchutch Road, on the same date. The receipt and letter to Stafford must have been in the Stafford postoffice, or perhaps reoeived by Mr Sandle when " Subscriber Ji forwarded his letter of the 26th inst; In conclusion I may remark that nothing could be farther from the intention of the Committee in the discharge of their onerous duties than.to offer discourtesy, to any section of the community.—l am, sir, yours &c, P. DUGGAK, Hon. Sec. Irish Relief Fund Committee. Kumara, March Ist, 1880.
