[united press association.] Dunedin, February 27. A man named James (Jeering committed suicide to-day by drowning himself in a creek. He had lately come out of a luuatic * asylum, and the act was in con-sequence of unsound mind. February 28. An important discovery has been made at Cardroua. A quartz reef carrying silver in considerable quantities has been found by a man at Cai'drOna range, near the head branch of the boundary creeks. A prospecting area has been applied for. The stone is supposed to contain gold. Auckland, February 27. Mr M'Kelvie, an old Auckland colonist, has sent to the Auckland Museum by the Loch Urr, from London, a collection of Maori curiosities, which had been in England for more than thirty years ; also a large collection of silver and copper coins, and twenty curious medals. Government are urged to quarantine the cattle expected by the Hero, fron Sydney; also cattle expected shortly from Queensland. February 28. A packet was found in harbor today, comprising a strip Of bamboo about a foot long with corks at each endi "Wrapped round it was a strip of paper, upon which was written the following, iu a schoolboy's hand-writ-ing :—" Earl Granville wrecked on Oozet Islands, on December 1879. All saved. Survivors of ship Knowsley Hall also here. Three have died since we were wrecked. Captain Anderson and part of the crew of the Knowsley Hall, are drowned. Be quick and send a vessel with provisions, as are nearly out—Crozet Islands,—2nd February, ISSO.—To Captain Burges, Aucklaud Harbor Board," On the strip of bamboo was written the following:—"Earl Granville has b<x.-n wrecked at GVozets. Survivors of Ivnowsley Hall also here from 22nd December, 1879.—2nd February, 1880." It is evidently a stupid hoax. A young man named M. M'Namara was kicked by a horse on the skull. He was takeu to the Hospital, but is not expected to recover. Hawera, February 28. The Royal Commission has finished
the enquiry, so far as concerns the country betweenn Patea and the country rivers. The Commission leaves for New Plymouth to-day. Wem.ino(Ton, February 28. Mrs Fisher who drew iW Play in the Wellington Cup, drew the same horse in Stapleton's sweep on the Dunedin Cup, thus wmuing .£IOOO within one month; February 29. The Evening Post subscription, list, in aid of the Irish Distress Relief Fund, has closed, the total amount snb> scribed being .£?2O. Tihahu, February 2d. Very heavy rain has been falling alt Jay, and the weather seems to have set in wet. Great fears are entertained for the crops, a portion of which are still to be stacked*
