Westport, February 21. At the District Court Elizabeth Marton, for Stabbing Rosanna Boyle, at the Lyell, was. sentepped to six weeks imprisonment.. Wm. Stewart, for assaulting M‘Lean, was acquitted. The verdict caused considerable surprise.
Dunedin, February 19. The Oamaru Mail states that Mr J. FT. Pope, ex master of the Girls' High School, has, been appointed Inspector of theJNative schools on bothielands. The Builders- Association has fixed the wages of employes as follows: Bricklayers, plasterers, and masons, 12s per day, carpenters 1 Os, laborers Bs. The. Carpenters Association has declined to accept Ipsq than 13s. CHRisTcupiieH, February 20. Yesterday morning a fire broke out in a back kitchen of Hathway’s store, East Oxford street. The building was soon burned down, and the East Oxford Town Hall caught fire before assistance could arrive, and was also destroyed. The insurances on the East Oxford fire are—Town Hall .£3OO in South British ; Hathway’a store and contents, £IOO in National and £325 in New Zealand. The Nga te Whiti have 156 men at Waipuna,,headed by Karaitaioa, and Kemp has 90, The story 'that Remp sent his gun to TaWhlao Js not true, and arose in this way.—Hohepa,, belonging to a section of the Arawera,. bearing that a disturbance tfas imtriJiiept Came to Watpuna, and said there tnust be no fighting, dnd Kemp gave up his gun to Hohepa. The Herald goes into the matter at great length, showing that the whole affair had arisen from specu-* lators occupying land for which they have no title. Kemp's action is ex* plained, and it is asserted 'that he is only maintaining the; rights of his people. The Herald also shows that the land in question is still uuder proclamation, and that the difficulty has arisen from Government encouraging private speculators—Stud holme, Mor* riii, and Co.—to negotiate direct with the natives.

Mr Richard Feltus fell off the Queen* street wharf In' the forenoon, and was helplessly drowning, when a young man named Evan Owens, a seaman on board the Penguin,jumped in and brought the exhausted man to Stringer’s wharf. He expressed his opinion in vigorous terms, and he avers that the owner assaulted him by pushing off the vessel, , besides making use of threatening language towards him.
