The munciplaity of Paris Voted 500 francs to defray the cost of a special collection of exhibits for Melbourne. The Chinese are being dismissed from the factories and railway works in California owing to popular pressure-. LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, February 18. Mr Berry states that he believes the result of his appeal will be the return df a smaller but more united Liberal majority. Seventy thousand bags of flour have been exported from Melbourne to London during the last fortnight. February 19. The Sydney Qovehunertt have commissioned Mr George Folingsby, artist, of Melbourne, to paint a portrait of Sir Hercules Robinson. Hezlett has been returned member for Paddington in the Legislative Assembly in place of Sutherland, resigned. Hezlett favors the Government .Education scheme.
The International Exhibition will be closed on the 20tb April. BrIsRaNE, February 21. A. man while bathing in the Kautree River, yesterday, was attached-by an alligator, which seized him in the thigh and crushed and clawed him severely. , The alligator finally slipped his hold and the man escaped. The steamer Meumur, from Singapore, reports that the comet was seen from Torres Straits.,. The nucleus was very red and quite visible. ’
