LATEST ENGLISH NEWS. London, February 17. Three Per Cent. Consols, 98, new seriesi The Colonial wool auction opened today* Eight thousand bales were catalogued for the opening sale. There was a large attendance of Home and foreign buyers. , ;. ANOTHER ATTEMPT ON THE LIFE OF THE CZAR. St. Petersburg, February 17. Intense excitement has been occasioned in this city in consequence of the renewed and dastardly attempt to destroy the Czar and the entire Imperial family. From the particulars which have at present transpired, it appears that about the time which the guests, who were invited to a grand dinner at the Winter Palace, were assembled, a mine, fired by electricity, was suddenly exploded under the guardroom, which is situated immediately beneath the grand dining-room. A terrific explosion took place* causing a large rent in the flooring of the dining hall, where the Imperial family were supposed to be congregated* Most providentially, however, they had not assembled, and all the members of the family consequently escaped. The guard room, was, however, cotfipletely destroyed, and five guards killed on the spot, and no less than thirty more or less seriously womided. Not the slightest doubt is entertained but that the attempt was made to assassinate the Czar and the Imperial family, and it is believed to be connected with the plot to destroy the palace, which was discovered some time ago. + LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. , Melbourne, February 19. Mr Black announces his intention of offering himself as a candidate for Maiden in the Government interest, in opposition to the Hon. James Service, the leader of the Opposition.
