A meeting of the Irish Relief Fund Committee will be held at the Town Hall to-morrow evening, when all subscription lists are requested to be sent in, as the
Committee are desirous of closing all the business at the meeting. An election, if necessary, to fill the vacancy in the County Council caused by the resignation of Mr Seddon, will be held on the 13th proximo. Nominations will be received at the Court House, Stafford Town, up to noon of the 28th inst. We understand that Mr Barff will be requested to allow himself to be nominated as one of the candidates.
The Hon. the Minister for Public Works, Mr Oliver, will ill all probability be a passenger by the Christchurch coach which is due at Hokitika to-morrow night. The final struggles in the chess handicap tournament continue to be of the most interesting character- Out of the three competitors we stated the Rev. Mr Scott had to meet to defeat Mr Ball for second place} he has now played two, winning the game with Mr Holst, but only drawing to Mr Everett. He has thus only one ‘coiilpetitol’ now to contend •against, that is Mr Moss, to whom he has to concede the odds of rook and two moves. If Mr Scott win this game lie will score i more than Mr Ball; if he lose it, he scores \ a game less than Mr Ball. The question, we understand, is to be decided this evening. As Mr Moss defeated Mr Ball, who is in the same class as Mr Scott, the result is looked forward to with much interest by the friends of both parties, as well as by all the other competitors.
The special correspondent of the Lyttelton Times, telegraphs on the 16th inst., from Normanby ; —“I have succeeded in obtaining an interview with a white man who, since 18G5, has been living amongst the Maoris, and it is established beyond all doubt that he is Kimble Bent, alias Samuel Smith, the notorious deserter from the 47th Regiment.”
