WESTLAND EDUCATION BOARD.

At meetings of the Board held in Hokitika on Thursday and Friday last, at which the Chairman and Messrs ;? feeddon, Patten, and Grirnmond were present, the following business was in connection with this district : , , A letter was received from the Secretary, Kumara Committee’, recommending the appointment of Mr G. N. Coles, as teacher 'at tile WestbrOok School. Resolved, “ That Mr G. N. Coles, be. appointed teacher of the Westbrook School under the 88th clause, as recommended by the committee.” The Secretary read to the Board a schedule of Works required, including school teachers Vesldences, and clearing, fencing, and draining school reserve, being a copy of the schedule jforwarded to Wellington by request of the Secretary for Education. Also a statement showing the amount in hand for building purposes, and the amount r still required to complete all the works included in the above nathed schedule. The amount required to complete all necessary works in the district being about £IO,OOO. , following amounts were added addition to Kumara School-House, ‘£2oo, and addition to book store £loo, A letter was received froth the Secretary, Kumara Committee, enclosing an account for £1 0s 4d, for repairs to the chimney at the teacher’s residence, .Kumara. and requesting the Board to pay the amount. The account was passed for payment; and the Secretary was instructed to forward a circular to committees, stating. s that the Board T\ould not lor the future pay for any works executed without their sanction. Resolved,. “ That specifications be prepared and tenders invited, for enlarging the Kumara school.” . Also from the Kumara Committee, requesting the Board to furnish two additional water tanks for the Kumara school, also spouting, tanks and closet for the Westbrook school. Resolved, “That the Board furnish two additional tanks for the Kiltiiahi School; also spouting, tanks and two closets for the Westbrook School;” . A letter was received from Mr R. ff. Seddon, Kumara, stating that Messrs Seddon, Mogdridge, Gallaud, Metcalf, Wylde, Griffiths, and Campbell were elected to be members of the Kumara Committee, and that Mr Seddon was elected to be chairman, and Mr Campbell secretary and treasurer. Gallant! no temporarily appointed assistant teacher in Kumara School, at a salary s of £l5O per annum.” Resolved, “ That W. Voysey be appointed pupil teacher at Kumara BchgfcJ. . Mr Seddon moved the following resolutions of which he gave notice at the previous meeting, viz.:—“That the resolution which was passed with reference to Caretakers of the Hokitika and GreymoUth SchdolS be rescinded. The rescinding to apply duly to the first paragraph 6f the resolution referred to, the portion relating to duties

of teachers under clause 77 of the byelaws not to be rescinded. The resolution in the above form was seconded by Mr Patten and carried. Resolved -‘That the Hokitika ami Greymouth Committees be informed that the Board will grant to them the sum of .£l2 10s per quarter, in addition to the capitation allowance, so. as to enable them to employ caretakers in their respective schools.” Resolved, “ That the Kumara School Committee be authorise to procure 200 liat pegs.” Resolved, “That £25 be expended in levelling the school ground at Kuniara.” Notice of Motion. Mr Seddon—That the question of granting a bonus to teachers for teach,- . ing the art of singing be considered at next faceting, and that the question of establishing a school of instruction for teachers be also considered.
