Melbourne, February 2. Phyloxera has been discovered near Batesford, in the Geelong district. The vineyards are being uprooted. An old man named Thomas Woods died from the effects of brutal injuries inflicted in a drunken row by a publican named Montgomery, of Creawick. Woods, three days before bis death, insured bis life for £4OO. The annual sale of the St. Alban’s yearling progeny of King of the Ring realised 2650 guineas, or an average of £556. Two men were sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment for an attempt to rob the Commercial Bank, Murcbistnn. The manager, raised an alarm by firing a revolver. Mr Hobbs, who as a boy came to Port Philip when Goveuor Collins, in 1803, endeavored to found a penal settlement at Point Nepean, died on January 30th. A curious theatrical dispute came before the Melbourne City Court. Miss Imogens, the American actress, summoned her agent, Russell Rogers, for a savage assault. The agent was fined £5 and costs, and bound over to keep the peace.
