Numerous applications for space have been received from the leading British manufacturers. The decision to provide additional space at the Exhibition gives general satisfaction. The Spectator warns England against the violent diatribes levelled by the Times’ Melbourne correspondent against the Victorian Government. It considers the nominee principle to concede all the power that can legitimately be demanded. The Saturday Review considers that the present ppwer of the Council requires modification, and regrets that the Council has not exhibited the moderation of the House of Lords. It condemns Mr Berry’s Bill as needlessly revolutionary and repugnant to British ideas of monarchical constitutional government. Mr Brssay read a paper before the Bradford Chamber of Commerce on the Colonial Empire. He commented on the value and great increase of their trade, and spoke of the Colonies as a splendid field for the labourer and small capitalist. He condemned the remissness of England in not providing for the defence of the colonies. Coaling stations were urgently required, also dock accommodation. He eulogised the recent action of Victoria in providing for her defence, and advocated a Federal Council for England and the Colonies.
