THE CHESS HANDICAP TOURNAMENT.
The chess tournament seems to be drawing to a close. Foremost stand the scores of the Rev. E. A. Scott and Mr A. R. Petrie, who have scored re* spectively 19£ and 22, and lost only 3| and 4 games. Next comes Mr Janion, who has scored 19, losing 7 games. Mr Ball, however, who has made slow progress, shows a loss of only 2£ games, with 9£ won, so that it is possible:tor him ; to come, even to the front. Mr M. Bell alsohason)y.,lost 5 games, and must therefore be . con* sidered to have a chance of third place, as he is supposed to be lightly handb capped; and he is one of those com* petitors who have improved so much since the tournament commenced that he has become a difficult opponent for the givers of odds to beat. Mr Brooks having left the district, all his uu- '
flayed games score £ won -Atid £ lost to each player with whom he had net competed.
