An infant, six montlis old, belonging to Mr Willis, at Winslow, was poisoned last week with chlorodyne during the temporary absence of the mother. One of the other children found a bottle which had been carefully hidden on a shelf, and gave the baby a dose. On her return, Mrs Wills discovered the child gasping, and it died in a few hours afterwards. Wellington, January 20. IT.M.S. Cormorant proceeds to the Heads this afternoon for shot and shell practice. The libel action, Anderson v. Kirkbridge, claiming £2OOO for an alleged libel published in a leading article of the Rangitikei Advocate on the 16h September last, is now being heard at the Supreme Court.

Nelson, January 19. A fire broke out in a large stable be* longing to Mr J. Hunt, High street, Motueka,about 10 o’clock on Sunday morning. A big crowd, with the aid of buckets and a plentiful supply of water, confined the fire to the stable, which was filled with new hay. The cause of the fire is unknown. There was no insurance.

The Foxhill railway station was broken into on Saturday, end between L 5 and L 6 in gold and silver abstracted the notes being left. The working surveys for the six-mile extension from Bellgrove towards Roundel), for which money was voted last session, are completed, and in a fortnight the working plans will be finished, and the Government in a position to call for tenders.
