[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, January 17. The General entries for the Wellington races close on Monday night. At the District Court to day, in the case of Meares v. Best, for £2OO alleged to have been fraudently appropriated, his Honor the Judge said no doubt defendant was guilty of fraud and trust, and the whole transaction, as far as defendant was concerned, was anything but straightforward, and would not redound to his credit. Judgment was given for £lO5, Frank Hook, lately of the Pantomime company, -and formerly of Christchurch, was arrested to-day on a charge of obtaining £SO from Thomas John Glew, by means of false pretences. Colonel Scratchley inspected the whole of the Wellington Volunteers yesterday evening. There was a large muster, numbering at least 400. The Hinemoa, after landing the white fish ova at the Bluff,, proceeds to the snares, to ascertain whether there is any trace of the missing ship Knowsley Hall off those Islands. A fearful accident occurred at- the Kaiwarra rifle range, this afternoon. A man named Francis Donald, who was marking at the butts, put up the dangfer flag, and ran out from the marker’s house just as a shot was fired, which struck him instantaneously. No blame is attributed to any of the Volunteers. Donald was a married man, and leaves a family of young children.
January 19. . A fire broke out this morning in a shed in the rear of Levy’s grocery store, Cuba street. The fire commenced under the floor, but no cause is given of its origin. Damage to the extent of <£2o was done before the fire was extinguished.
At the inquest to-day on the body of Francis Donald, shot at Kaiwarra rifle pit on Saturday, the jury returned a verdict of “ Accidental death,” and added a rider to the effect that some more stringent code of signals should be adopted. Yesey Stewart has purchased from the Government, under the Land Act of last session, the Tnpeke block of 15,000 acres 120 miles south ot Tauranga, for establishing another special settlement on the Ratikati system. The Supreme Court in Banco, granted a nonsuit, with costs in the case of Richardson v the Bank of New South Wales. The grounds were misdirection of Judge, and that the verdict (which was for £1700) was against the weight of evidence. TimarU, January 16.
Two men named Wm. Reilly and Robert Uobinson were arrested to-day, charged with robbery and violence. They were identified by a man named M l Nulty as the two men who had robbed him on the road near town the previous night. Subsequently one of them was identified by another man, who was robbed a week ago about the same place. A young man, employed as barman at the Club Hotel, was brought up at the R.M.Court to-day charged with larceny of money from his employer, and remanded till Monday. Napier, January 16. The Natives of Tologa, Eaet Coast, have stopped Mr Tickey, surveyor, in surveying a block of land at Waipu. One man warned the party off the ground, ami went away threatening to return with an armed party. Under the circumstances Major Ropata has written to Haig, he had better not survey for the present. ■ Auckland, January 16.
A double attempt was made to upset the Waikato trains to-day, by placing large blocks of scoria on the rails near the mouth of the Domain tunnel. The vigilence of the drivers prevented the success of the dastardly attempt. The police are investigating the mystery. Firth successfully placed 70,000 white fish ova in Tarawera, 250,000 in Takipn,' and 250,000 in Kutara Lakes, M'lvor, owner of Grey Momus, was brutally assaulted at Cambridge on the race evening, having been set upon by several half drunken men who brutally kicked him. His right arm is broken, and one ; of his eyes injured.
In the case, W. Blandon v City Council, in which plaintiff claimed £SOO for injury to property through improvements. Judge Gillies and a majority of asressors awarded £4OO and costs. £25. It is stated that Winiata’s brother has recently been amongst theHgaputias in the north to sow dissatisfaction and get fresh convents to Hau-hauism, and Tawhaio also reported that in the event of strife taking place, portions of three Waikato tribes were likely to take up arms against us and on the side of the Parihaka fanatics, but whether at Waikato or at Parihaka'ia not known.
