BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, January 13. News from Afghanistan states that General Roberts routed the Afghans of Ghuznee with heavy loss. German Consuls are to be appointed at the capital cities of Australia and New Zealand.
The Consul-General of Sydney and the French Chamber of Commerce have been urged by the Government to secure an efficient representation of France at the Melbourne Exhibition.
January 14. . It is officially known that Bismarck has warned Russia to keep peace, and not to tolerate a Franco-Russo alliance. There is an increasing indication of a general election taking place about Easter.
The Austro-Servia difficulty has been arranged. The Globe suggests a compromise of the difficulty in Victoria, and proposes that the Council shall become simply a revising chamber. It condemns the plebiscite. Sir H. C. E.-Childers has returned from Canada.
The floating of the South Australian loan has been deferred owing to a dispute as to the minimum. The latest news from Afghanistan states that the tribes are menacing. General Roberts telegraphs that a large force is required to maintain the supremacy of the British arms.
LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, January 13. The Mayor of Melbourne expects to remit £SOOO to Dublin on Friday next.
January 14. . The affairs of the Australian and European and Commercial Banks have been adjusted. The shareholders of the former are to receive 325, which is equivalent to a loss of 38s per share.
January 16. A young French half caste stuck up a station in Gippsland, and confined seven persons for several hours, and then decamped. He has not yet been captured.
Sydney, January 16. Hew Zealand wheat 4s to 4s 6d ; Hew Zealand oats, 2s 3d to 2s 6d; maize, 2s M to 2s 6d.
The Executive have finally decided to hang tiie bushrangers, . Scott and Rogan,.on the day appointed, the 20th inst.
Adelaide, January 16. Wheat, 5s 2d to 5s 4d; flour, £l2 15s to £l3.
Brisbane, January 16. The National Bank of Queensland at Cmmamulla, in the Warrego district, was bailed ttp ' yasterdayy by a bushranger, whose name is at present unknown. Murphy, storekeeper,.Went to the assistance of the bank manager, and in the scrimmage witli the bushranger, received a severe wound on the head. Some residents cf Cunnamulla assisted the police iii pursuit of the bushranger, he was eventiully caught, and is now in custody.
