Melbourne, January IG. The Bank of New South Wales has given notice of withdrawal fiom the agreement with the other banks respecting the rates of interest. The Chief Secretary has prohibited the production of the burlesque styled, “ Happy Land," wherein it was intended to represent Berry, Longmore, and Smith, in the characters of Gladstone, Lowe, and Ayrton. Large subscriptions are coming in towards the Irish Relief Eund.
Brisbane, January 16. A quantity of wool, damaged in the Scottish Knight, has recently been beached at Sandy Cape. The vessel will probably be floated, and proceed to Sydney for repairs. Sydney, January 16. An exciting debate took place in the Assembly last night on the Trea- urer's proposal to impose excise duty on Colonial ale. The proposition was ultimately rej cted by a majority of two, ami the remaining resolutions in favour of excise duties were withdrawn.
