"Westport, January 13. Another perjury action, J. Johnston v> E. J. O'Conor, was commenced at the Resident Magistrate Court to-day, and adjourned, owing to latter's absence at ELaramea. An application for the arrest of O'Conor, on the ground of tampering with witnesses with intent to evade service of information, was refused.

The perjury case, O'Conor v, Johnston, is now pending in the Reefton Court.

The litigation case between these two persons, and which commenced over three cattle, has so far cost some £SOO, and is not yet finished.

Wellington, January 12. One of the bells recently hung in the tower of St. Peter's Church fell on Saturday owing to the wheel of the shaft jumping out of the socket. Luckily its descent was stopped by some strong beams immediately under the bells, or otherwise it would have crashed through the floor and fallen on the top of three of the bell-riugeiv?, who were in the bell-fry, The bell, which weighs 15 cwt., was uninjured, and. soon put back.

It is understood that the Royal Commission on Native Affairs will consist of Sir R D. Bell, M.L.C., Sir W. Fox, and Mr Tawhiao, M.ILR.

January 13. The Colonial Insurance Company have received a telegram stating that the steamer Penguin was ashcre at Tauranga, and a terrific gale blowing. They are not interested. It is believed she is close to the spot where the s.s. Taiipo was wrecked. Tauranga, January 13. The steamer Penguin from Auckland was coming in this morning when she was blown on a sand bank (opposite to where the Taupo lies) by a strong gale. A steamer was immediately despatched to her assistance, and on arrival at the spot, took on board passengers and mails and brought them into town safely. Efforts were then made to get the Penguin off, which were successful. She sustained no injury, and should weather prove moderate will leave for south this evening.

Nelson, January 12. Throughout the district there is a capital harvest.

It is expected that Nelson will be represented by a volunteer crew at the Wellington Regatta 5 also in the yacht race. Mr Taylor, boat builder, is also just completing a likely looking whale boat for the Champion Race, but considerable difficulty is experienced in men getting away for the occasion, and it is thought that the Nelson Rowing Club will not be represented* Dunedin, January 13. New Plymouth, January 12. An old Native, named Tamahana Tuhawe, Was found dead in a paddock yesterday, and it is supposed he was killed by a kick from his horse. January 13. Great preparations are being made for a tangi over old Tamahana, who was killed on Saturday by his horse, and over 300 Natives assembled to take part.
