WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.

ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. • « A special meeting of the Council was held iu the Chamber at noon yesterday j present Messrs Grimmond (Chairman), Seddon, Dale, M'Goldrick, Hirier, Sandle, Jack, M'Whirter, and Lang. The Chairman said the meeting was convened in pursuance of a Gazette notice, on the application of the Council to extend the time for the election of Chairman. The time bad been extended to the second Thursday in January, accordingly. (Gazette notice read.) He now declared the meeting open for the election of a Chairman for the present year. Mr Seddon moved, in order to facilitate business and in accordance with the wish of the Council, an adjournment until 3 p.m. which he, by leave, afterwards amended to 1 p.m. Members would then have an opportunity of interchanging thoughts *on the subject. Mr Dale seconded the motion which would, he believed, if carried, avoid a good deal of unpleasantness. The motion was put and carried, and the meeting adjourued accordingly uutil one p.m.

On resuming at one p.m., in the Supreme Court House, all the members were present. The Chairmau said he would take a proposition.

Mr Dale moved, fhab-'Mr Jack be Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr M'Goldrick secouded. Mr Lang moved an amendment that Mr Lang he elected Mr M'Whirter seconded. A division resulted as follows :—for the amendment, 5; Messrs Kandle. Hirter, Lang, M'Whirter, and Grimmond. Against, 4 : Messrs Seddon, M'Goldrick, Jack, and Dale. The Chairman then declared Mr Lang duly elected. Mr Lang, having taking the tihair, briefly thanked the Council for the honor done him. No doubt there might be better men among them, but he would do what be could to deserve their confidence. He was quite aware he would be perhape more useful outside than inside, but he would nevertheless do his best. The meeting then terminated*
