While engaged in the work of raising the steamer Mokau, at North Mokau River, Mr flollis discovered the bowsprit of H.M.S. Orpheus embedded in the sand. The spar, which measured 34 feet, had floated nearly a hundred miles down the coast. It was cut and used for raising the steamer. Oue of the pieces will be presented to the Museum.
Messrs O'Rorke and Mnlgan have gone to Christchurch in order to meet their colleagues, the commissioners on higher education. An accident happened to Mr Grant, one of the Lincolnshire delegates. The Attorney-General who was driving a buggy and pair, lost hold of the reins. Mr Grant jumped down, and while endeavoring to right matters the wheel of the buggy went over him. At ths Supreme Court session, a Maori, named Te Ingoronga, was sentenced to six months imprisonment for forgery and uttering. Another batch of Dempsey's working men got judgment at the R.M. Court for wages due.
Grahams-town, January 7. The Grand Lodge session of the Good Templars was continued to-day. A number of subjects with regard to the better working of the Order were discussed, and the finaces adjusted. It was resolved to have periodical meetings oi the Order in the Colony, and to support temperance hotels; it was also resolved to raise an additional fund for better representation at the Grand Lodge session. It is expected the next session will be at Christchurch. The following officers were appointed for the ensuing year:—G.W.C.T. W. Johnston, Wellington; G.W.C., Jenkins, Newmarket ;G.W.V.T„ John -Scott, Thames; G.W.S.,Ellis,Auckland; G.W. C.,H. Price, Wellington. Alhurnia buyers at 82s 6d, ex div (20s); Moanatiari, 52s 6d. The natives are mustering for the great meeting at Waitou. Major Mair will represent the Government. It is now said that it was John Smith, draper, not His Excellency, who offered 500 guineas for Libeller.
