At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Mark B. Ryott was committed for trial on two charges of forgery, and on five charges of issuing valueless cheques. He was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, and sentence to be Concurrent. It is believed he is well connected at Home.
The Charge of perjury against Mr P. K. Watty, commision agent, at the instance of the Deputy Commissioner of Stamps, was partly heard at the Court to-day. The information charges him with having falsely declared the amount of cash in the estate of the late John Hogg, of the Perry Hotel) Porieua. The case was adjourned; Mr Hastwell, proprietor of a line of coaches between Wellington and Palmerston North, was found dead at Grey town to-day. No cause was given for death, but it is believed to be heart disease.

A fire broke 6ut yesterday morning in Stone,s Boiling-down Works, Milford. A large quantity of tallow and Wood Was burned, and about 150 sheep belonging to Mareing, which had been penned up ready for shearing. There is nothing known of the origin of the fire. The total loss is estimated, afe L9OO. Insurance—L2oo in the National on the boiling-down plant, and L6OO in the Standard on Wool and tallow.
