The man* after conversation with the doctor, during which he applied for admission to the hospital * took the opportunity of the doctor’s back being turned to strike him at the back of the head with a large stone. The Government received a cablegram from the Agent-General, stating that the Bank of England, having undertaken the issue of the loan, there is no doubt of its being successfully floated. A young man named Ryote was arx’ested last night for issuing valueless cheques. The new marble altar for St. Mary’s Cathedral was consecrated this morning by Bishop Redwood. A large assembly witnessed the ceremony. A serious stabbing case took place last evening. Two married women, neighbors, had a dispute, during which several threats were made. On the return home of their husbands, a row between the men ensued, and one of them, named James Flannagan, was rather severely stabbed ; his wife also received several bruises. Dennis M‘Corfu iclc, the other man, has been arrested. The doctor states that Flannagan and his wife are not out of danger.

Wellington, December 8. James M‘Oormack, a powerful fellow, appeared in the R.M. Court charged this morning, with catting and wounding James Flanagan and wife, The wounded persons were unable to appear. Dr Diver deposed that the man had a cub from the nose to his eyebrows, besides two outs on his head. The woman also had two cuts on her head. Prisoner was remanded, but bail was allowed. The steamer Lusitania left Plymouth on the 4th December for Australia, with '414 passengers. Major Te Wheoro received J a letter from one of his principal chiefs in Waikato informing him that Rewi had left by canoe for Te Kuiti. His last words to European and Maoris before leaving were “ I will now listen to the Word of Te Whiao. I will never consent to see the present Government; nor will I again return to dwell amongst the Europeans. I leave it with those important persons who have abused Sir George Grey to see how they can manage affairs in my absence.” PROPERTY ASSESSMENT BILL. Wellington, December 6. The following agreements were made in Committee on the Property Assessment Bill last night : Clause 12, exempting all property under £3OO value was amended to read £SOO. Clause 12, where every company shall be liable to taxation on its capi. tal, namely, the balance of assets over liabilities of th‘e company, was struck out. Clause 18 was made to read as follows ; —The mortgage of any land shall in respect of such land be liable to taxation only in the difference between the whole value of the land mortgaged and the amount of the. money advanced On the mortgage of the laud, provided that in every such case the mortgage shall append to the statement of the property belonging to him the names and addresses of the respective mortgages.
