The report that good gold was again found at the head of Larrikins is, we are gratified to state, daily receiving confirmation, as on Saturday last Skipper and party struck the lead in their new claim at Ross Terrace, obtaining half a pennyweight to the dish of splendid rough gold. They had driven in about 50 feet from their jump-up, when they came on the lead which here runs S.E. to N.W. A well-attended meeting was held at the Court House on Saturday evening last, for the purpose of forming a “Broad Miners Testimonial Fund.” His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair, and briefly pointed out the object of the meeting, and in so doing referred in the most feeling manner to the great esteem in which the late Warden of the district was hold and the general regret expressed by ad classes of the community on hearing of Mr Broad’s decease. Mr W. Barton was appointed secretary, and the Chairman Treasurer. The' following Committee were appointed from those present for the purpose of canvassing the district, all subscriptions being limited to 2s 6d Messrs Barff, G. Stewart, Horne, Cornnell, Munyard, Wylde, Fitzsimmons, D. Flaherty, Foldie, and Salvador. The Committee then adjourned until Tuesday evening, at eight o, clock. At the Theatre Royal this evening, Mr Lalor, 8.A., will deliver a lecture on “The Creation of the World.” The lecturer, who is known to be a thoroughly good elocutionist, should, from the interesting nature of the subject he has chosen for his lecture, secure a large attendance. The chair will be taken by E. Barff, Esq., at eight o’clock punctually. The Children’s Picnic Committee will meet at the Town Hall this evening, at eight o’clock, for the purpose of completing arrangements for the picnic on New dear’s Day, when it is hoped that all those who have been nominated on the Committee will attend. Vve are requested to draw the attention of the inhabitants of this district to the fact that the subscription lists for the childrens annual picnic are headed “ Subscription List for the purpose of providing the Annual Treat to the Children of the various Schools on New Year’s Day.” Public attention to this being necessary as another list emanating from JXr Stanton’s private scliool is also in circulation in the town, and we understand that persons have subscribed to this list under the impression it was the one authorized by the Children’s Picnic Committee. Ye learn from a paragraph in the Melbourne Lorgnette, that our “Colonial
BoUcicault” is now engaged upon an entirely original Australian patriotic play, to be entitled “The Forlorn Hope.” The play will be produced on Boxing night at the Princess’ Theatre, under the management of Mr Walter Reynolds, on a scale of great splendour, one hundred auxiliaries being necessary for the spectacular effects. The author and a specially selected company will appear in the drama. It was understood that when last Mr Darrell was here, that his next production would be a New Zealand drama, introducing scones in Dunedin and on the West Coast, but we presume from the above that “ George” has altered his mind.
