A sitting of the Resident Magistrate’s Court was held at two o’clock yesterday afternoon, as Dr Giles, R.M., had to hold a Court at Stafford Town on Ids round from Hokitika. The followingcases were disposed of ; —Police v. Hassell, for allowing goats to stray at large contrary to the bye-law of the Borough. Defendant was fined 5s. —Police v. Mary Sheedy: obscene language. Defendant was fined £5 or one month’s imprisonment. —The same defendant was charged with selling alcoholic liquors without a license, but the case was dismissed.—A case of abusive language preferred by D. Falvcy against M. Sheedy was dismissed, with costs against complainant of 7s —An assault case of Turner V. H. Bell was also dismissed, with costs 7s, against complainant. In the following civil cases, judgment was given for plaintiff : Quinn v. Kennedy, £4 10s ; Denlield v. Bowes, £4 15s lOd ; and Toms v. Lewis, £1 15s. The San Francisco mails, which left Hokitika by the Murray, for Nelson, were forwarded here by tram last evening, from Greymouth, in consequence of that vessel being unable, through the state of the weather, to leave port. The mail was taken to the loop-line early this morning by Rugg’s coach, where it was placed on board the mail coach for Christchurch. At the nomination of candidates for the three vacant seats in the Arahura Road Board, held yesterday at Stafford, the following persons were duly proposed and seconded, and the show of hands was Seddon, 4 ; F. Lock, 9 ; W. H. San die, 3 ; Limmell, 8 ; Lyons, 7 ; J. Tennent, 9 ; M‘Whirter, 3 ; Stanhope, 8 ; Newrick, 8 ; T. Tennent, 8 ; J. Mrtrphy, 8 ; and S. M. George, 9. A poll was demanded by Mr Sandle on behalf of Mr No wrick and himself, which will take place on Thursday next. From a notice that appears in another column it will be observed that Messrs Tait Brothers, photographers, of Hokitika, intend visiting this town next week, and will open their studio in the Main shadow ere the substance fade.” The Road, for the purpose of taking any portraits or views with which they may be favored with orders for.
