A REMINISCENCE OF EARLY DAYS.
• ■-» u . . It is stated that the late C. F. Angas, whe died recently in South Australia, played an important part in the early history of New Zealand. Indeed, it is said that;it was through him that the English Government was induced to | take possession of these islands. In an * account of his life, which extended over 90 years, the South Australian Register says;—“ln 1838 it came to the knowledge of Mr Angas that the French Government was arranging to send out an expedition to New Zealand to appropriate the islands in order to their colonisation. He at once made the matter known to Lord Glenelg (his personal friend) in a letter in which the inquiry, what would be done to British interests in the Australian seas if a foreign power were allowed to establish itself in New Zealand, was forcibly pointed out. Im terviews with his Lordship followed, and as the result, Captain Hobson was sent out in IT.M.S. Druid to enter into a treaty with the Native chiefs for the cession of the island to Great Britain. The negotiations were concluded, and in August, 1840, the raising of the Koyal standard at Akaroa completed the annexation of the group.”
